(upbeat music) - i am pleased to present this year's vilcek prize in design toisraeli-born neri oxman. neri's work mixing computational design, digital fabrication and more, redefines
iris van herpen 3d printing, our concept of smart materials as well as the relationship betweenmatter and environment. (audience clapping) - i came to the united states 10 years ago
with a single suitcaseand very few belongings. amongst those belongingswas my great grandmother's candelabra, a piece of the past, a piece of memory that made it to my childhood's table for shabbat dinners. i always dreamed of whatmight this candelabra have seen in and through the stories of my families migration fromeastern europe to israel in the early 1900's.
migration is very integralto what being human is. the ancient jewish andhebrew scriptures teach us through the storiesof abraham, that one finds his destiny notthrough a destination, but through a journey. i would like to thank jan and marica for recognizing thejourney as destination. there are many awards that recognize an accomplishment or amonumental achievement
as destination and you have really created the opportunity for allof us, the vilcez winners, to celebrate this journey as destination. i would like to thank the mit media lab for providing me witha home away from home, and with a second childhood for the mind. i would like to thankmy precious colleagues at the mit media lab and beyond, specifically professor craig carter,
the department of materialscience and engineering and many other collaboratorsthat have worked along with me through this journey. i would also like to thank my incredible team of students, the media that matter research group at the mit media lab, you are the keepers of the fire. last but not least, i would like to thank my family, my ima and abawho are here with me tonight,
who have traveled from israel, professor (mutters) robert oxman and my husband osvaldo golijov
i would also like tothank my precious friends for always igniting thefire of this candelabra and showing me the way. thank you so much.
