do you have a 3d printer? do you find that you end up carrying these files from your computer over to your 3d printer about 1000 times per day? via sneaker net? well today on joe geek we are going to cover something called "octoprint" on a little microcomputer called a raspberry pi i am going to show you how to get it setup and get it running in no time. let's go! ♬ dance music playing ♬ hello everyone and welcome to joegeek - sowhat is octoprint?
why do i want it? what will i need to set it up? in this 2 part series we will go over allof these in turn so that you can have a powerful tool in your 3d printing arsenal. in part 1 we are going to get everything youneed to get this going. part 2 we will do the actual setup. to discuss octoprint we first have to talkabout the platform it runs on. it runs on raspberry pi. what is that?
the raspberry pi is a series of credit card-sizedsingle-board computers developed in the united kingdom by the raspberry pi foundation topromote the teaching of basic computer science in schools and developing countries. what makes it so great is it can run manydifferent operating systems, including linux which is what we are going to be running withoctoprint. why do i want it? currently the 2 main ways you can run yourhome or even business 3d printer are 1. keeping your printer tethered to a personalcomputer or laptop for the entire run of the print.
if the pc has an update or powers off theprint will be lost. the other way is you have to carry the printfile over to the printer via your feet and put it in the printer, start the print andkeep an eye on the print to make sure it does not fail. how does octoprint fix this? well it is a web server, contains cura, apowerful slicer built right in, and also allows for connecting of a webcam. watching with a webcam means you can watchyour print instead of sitting right next to your printer, but instead from the comfortof your bed at 2am because you're paranoid
its going to fail. what will i need to get this going? just a few things and a little bit of timeand super computer skillzorz, just kidding… follow along to see. pause the video when you need to. links to all of these parts, file and stuffwill be down below in the description. if you use amazon links in the descriptionit helps me out a ton, and costs you not 1 penny more. thanks!
open up amazon, order this stuff and whileyou are waiting for it to arrive get the software you will need for this. if you already have an old raspberry pi youcan skip ahead in the video. raspberry pi 3 version b - as of today thisis the latest, greatest and mostest bestest version of the pi around. it contains a broadcom bcm2837 soc runningat an eye watering 1.2ghz 64 bit quad core arm cortex-a53 processor with 512kb l2 cache…omg i just drooled on myself. a micro usb power adapter (this is how youpower the pi)
at least 8gb microsd chip (if you dont haveone laying around go for 32gb evo - they are fast and cheap as…. chips… ahem.) this will be the “hard drive†for thepi and you won't take it out. the more storage you have for the files thebetter. if you do not want this to be on an ethernetconnection you will need a wireless usb dongle (hehe). any will do but this one here works well: webcam - this is not required but it doesmake a great addition to your print server.
this is for a logitech c920. its a bit overkill but its what i own andcannot verify it works on other webcams. i hear it does support many of the top webcammanufacturers, buy at your own risk i guess. the c920 looks amazing and is being replacedin the next few years with a newer flagship webcam. that is it for purchases: more stuff:if you want a case for it you can print one out later (or while waiting for the partsto arrive) from thingiverse: i am going to be setting this up on windows10.
there are other guides around for mac os andother os’es software required:octoprint - octoprint is the web server, printer controller that will run on the raspberrypi side note: consider donating to help keepoctoprint running. they lost funding and are doing entirely throughdonations. win32 imager - you will need this to installthe octoprint putty - putty is a free software package thatallows for secure connections on a network. ok that is all of the things you will needfor getting this project going. head over to part 2 for how to set it up.
what software to use for 3d printing,
please give me a like and subscribe! a comment would also be helpful if you feelso inclined. thank you all for watching! on to part 2.
